Our directors share a passion for true, heartfelt and funny films.

Keep it real.

Bette Westerhoff
Freelance Director

My passion is working with ‘real’ people and making them the best version of themselves. With my background in journalism I’m an educated storyteller, but it wasn’t long after graduating that I realised that day-to-day news is not my cup of tea. Storytelling however, is!

I’ve been working for a great deal of human interest television programs (in collab with broadcasters such as BNN-VARA, KRO-NCRV) for the last couple of years. At BigShots I’ve directed branded content and portraits clients such as Unilever, ProRail, SBA and ABN AMRO.

Let’s mix, match and serve it up spicy.

Bram Koopman
Director / Creative

After cooking up skateboard videos and comedic sketches in high school, Bram started his professional career as an item director at BNN. He went on to add theoretical depth to his practical skills through a Master’s in Film & Television Studies at Utrecht University, after which he joined Big Shots as a director.

Bram is an optimist, infused with a lust for life. He loves making upbeat work, capturing inspiring or eyebrow-raising moments in a documentary way or creating them from scratch in fictitious work, often involving a great dose of humour and visual abundance.

Aside from writing and directing  the viral Chicks Love Diks, Bram shot numerous international short documentaries for KLM’s award-winning iFly magazine and commercials for PostNL, KPN, Unicredit and Specsavers.

If you look closely, there are great stories everywhere.

Danny van den Bersselaar
Director / Creative

Danny loves to observe characters in their behaviour and he doesn’t feel bound or committed to any specific format like for instance fiction or documentary. In fact, he enjoys exploring a variety of ways and formats to present his stories and feels at his best when cleverly playing with the viewers perception of fact and fiction through crossovers. His favourite? An element of ‘mockumentary’ element integrated in his narratives.

He enjoys working in a group of creatives and really aims for that during the creation process – from concept to delivery. Leaving little to no space for egos.

His style can be described as authentic, accessible and laid back. He prefers to let the images do the talking and communicate the richness of their stories. Danny’s work has won several international industry awards.

Commercials, drama series, brand movies, Steven likes making it all. And particularly loves shooting kids and winning Emmy’s.

Steven Wouterlood
Freelance Director

Steven Wouterlood has directed numerous short films and commercials as fiction director. His television film Anything goes (Alles mag, 2013) won an International Emmy Award in New York and multiple awards around the world. In 2016 his television series Nobody’s Boy (Alleen op de wereld) will be released by VPRO, based on the renowned novel by Hector Malot.

Steven directed commercials and virals for brands as Albert Heijn, Rabobank, T-Mobile, NS, Vodafone and KLM. His style can be described as authentic, close to reality. He likes to combine fiction and documentary and tell meaningful stories. To show people’s emotional perspectives and follow them close to the skin.

I grew up next to a video store.

Niels Bourgonje
Freelance Director

Niels grew up next to a video store. Years before his parents bought their very own VCR player, Niels was a regular customer there; looking at the covers, fantasizing about the wondrous world of the movies.  In his mind he had already seen all of the films. Many years later, he figured out a way to transport these visions for others to see.

You could say he’s a filmmaker that thinks outside the box, only he never knew about the box to begin with. Without any formal film education, Niels developed a DIY attitude that was unstoppable. Attracting clients like McDonalds, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Philips, Albert Heijn and Unilever.
He also directed several award winning short films. Whether he’s trying to sell a product or to tell a story, Niels is all about engaging the viewer. And when he succeeds in doing that, he feels like a kid in a video store.

The new excites. Shifts perspective and changes minds.

Sem Chouikha
Freelance Director

The human perception of things drives the world. I aim to give people a new experience. Shift their perspective, change minds. Grow. The new excites. It brings change. Without curiosity we would still live in caves. That feature, curiosity, will one day improve life for all.

My preferred tools are science fictional concepts, visual effects, amazing techniques and true emotion in acting. In order to desire, we need to trust first. In order to trust, we need to believe. And in order to believe, we have to see.

In every concept or execution I focus on the real, actual motivation of people. What is it that makes someone love or leave? Clearly that’s about emotion, over product.

You call this work?

Daan Steijnen
Director / DOP

My work is akin to my interests: divers, cinematic and where possible asking meaningful questions about life. I spend most of my time as a creative/director and cinematographer. Aiming to Capture both visual awe and unique and genuine moments is one of the “film-challenges” I enjoy. My hunger for new experiences and a deeper understanding of pretty much everything is what makes me tick. You can learn a lifetime and translating these experiences into essentials and remarkable stories is what I finds most rewarding.

Daan created online series and films, short documentaries, corporate stories, branded content and TV commercials for brands like KLM, TomTom, Meewind and Beijenkorf.

A journalist turned filmmaker.

Kristiaan van Asscheman
Freelance director

With my background in journalism, I love turning complex matter into something that’s both understandable and enjoyable to watch. In my early days I worked as a camjo (camera journalist), which helped me to develop a wide set of skills in filming, editing and directing. It also helps me to understand the diversity in disciplines needed to create something beautiful.

Without a doubt, my main interest are people. Whether it’s a CEO, a craftsman or just a random passer-by, I love to listen to their stories and share them with the world.

On a life-long journey collecting stories

Robert-Jan Glas
Chief Creative / partner

Robert-Jan is on a lifelong journey collecting stories. For over ten years he worked on documentaries, TV-programs, shorts, TV-commercials and ton’s of corporate movies. In his role as creative director he guides dozens of projects simultaneously, what makes Robert-Jan a many sided director. As a result he thinks in quick creative solutions during concept-fase and on set. With his optimistic, open spirit and genuine interest, he makes a connection with any subject.

Let’s try something else

Elian Wils
Chief Creative / Founder

Just now, I discovered a tiny ant floating in in my glass of water. Right above the bottom. It was moving its legs, calm like it enjoyed a good dive. For real! Now I had to rescue this little character fighting for survival. So I poured all of the water over the table. “The floor would probably have been the better option”, I thought, running with my wet laptop to the kitchen. Then I suddenly saw my little friend again. Drying up above the escape button.
I love short stories with happy endings and daring characters and I aim to direct sets and scenes to be as real as possible.

Happy to meet you!
